Located in Edmonton, Dérmica offers a variety of skincare treatments and services.
Facial or Peel: Which One Fits Your Skin Goals?
When comparing a facial vs chemical peel, the biggest differences are the depth of exfoliation, products and techniques used, recovery time, and your overall skin goals.
The Timeless Classic: Why Facials Never Go Out of Style
A facial is a customizable treatment focused on maintaining and improving the skin’s overall condition. At Dérmica, our facials include classic steps such as deep cleansing, exfoliation, steam, and the application of selected serums, eye care, lip treatment, and moisturizer. Depending on the facial selected, treatments can also include masks, massage, brow services, or other features.
NOTE: Facials are a great option when your goals centre around routine skincare, cleansing, hydration, extractions, or simply refreshing the appearance of your skin. No recovery time.
The Deeper Reset: How Is a Chemical Peel Different?
Chemical peels provide more targeted chemical exfoliation using enzymes or hydroxy acids such as AHA and BHA. Deep peels range from 20% to 85% strength. Deep peels provide more intensive resurfacing and may cause visible shedding and flaking. They target concerns including pigmentation, acne, fine lines, dry or rough skin, congestion, excess oil, uneven texture, and signs of aging.
Different Acids for Different Skin Goals
We don’t choose an acid simply because it is stronger. Different acids have different properties, which allows us to select the type of exfoliation based on what your skin needs. For example, we use glycolic and lactic acids when treating concerns associated with dry or combination skin, aging, and hyperpigmentation.
For oily, congested, or acne-prone skin, we may use salicylic acid, a BHA. Because salicylic acid is oil-soluble, it can exfoliate within the pore and help address excess sebum and debris. Salicylic acid is the preferred acid to target concerns such as acne, congestion, blackheads, whiteheads, milia, excess oil, inflammation, and redness.
NOTE: Consider a chemical peel when your goals include more targeted treatment for concerns such as pigmentation, acne, fine lines, or dry skin. Recovery time is 3-10 days.
TIP: At Dérmica, we offer mild BOOST peels as an add-on to your facial or dermaplane treatment. Boost peels are mild intensity (<20%) and a great introduction to deep peels.
