Why Is My Skin Dry Even Though I Moisturize?

Living in Alberta can be challenging for your skin. Cold temperatures, dry air, wind, and indoor heating can leave skin feeling tight, rough, flaky, or uncomfortable. You may moisturize every day and still wonder why your skin doesn’t feel properly hydrated. The problem isn’t necessarily that you aren’t moisturizing enough. Several factors can affect how well your skin retains moisture.
1. Blame It on Alberta!
Alberta’s dry climate can make it more difficult for skin to maintain hydration, particularly during the colder months. Moving between cold outdoor conditions and warm, heated indoor environments can contribute to skin feeling increasingly dry.
Your skincare needs may also change with the seasons. Products that work well during the warmer months may not provide enough hydration when the weather becomes colder and drier.
2. Your Skin Barrier Is Not Invincible
Your skin barrier plays an important role in keeping moisture in and protecting the skin. Frequent exfoliation, over-cleansing, or using several strong skincare products at the same time can leave the skin feeling dry, tight, or sensitive.
If your skin suddenly feels drier than usual, take a look at your entire routine. Sometimes simplifying your skincare and being gentler with exfoliation can be more beneficial than simply applying more moisturizer.
3. Your Moisturizer Might Be Too Lightweight for the Job
Not all moisturizers provide the same level of hydration. A lightweight moisturizer that works well for you during the summer may not feel like enough during Alberta’s dry winter months.
When your skin becomes noticeably drier, consider switching to a richer moisturizer. You can also try applying moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp after cleansing rather than waiting until your face is completely dry.
4. That Squeaky-Clean Feeling? Not Always a Good Thing
Your cleanser is another important part of the equation. If your skin feels very tight or stripped immediately after washing, your cleanser may not be the best choice for your current skin needs.
Very hot water and frequent washing can also contribute to dryness. Consider using warm rather than very hot water and switching to a gentle, hydrating cleanser that cleans the skin without leaving it feeling stripped. This can be particularly helpful during Alberta’s colder, drier months.
More Moisturizer Isn’t Always the Answer
If your skin continues to feel dry even though you moisturize regularly, don’t focus on moisturizer alone. Your cleanser, exfoliation habits, skin barrier, moisturizer, and Alberta’s climate can all influence how your skin looks and feels.
The skincare routine that works for you in July may not be what your skin needs in January. Paying attention to seasonal changes and adjusting your products accordingly can help provide your skin with the additional hydration and protection it needs.
